Prophecies of the Messiah – The Mighty God

Prophecies of the Messiah – The Mighty God

The Hebrew Scriptures
For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end, upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, to order it and establish it with judgement and justice from that time forward, even forever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this. (Isaiah 9:6-7)

The New Testament
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it…

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. (John 1:1-14)

And a great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that it was already filling. But He (Jesus) was asleep in the stern on a pillow….

Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still!” And the wind ceased and there was a great calm….

And they feared exceedingly, and said to one another, “Who can this be, that even the wind and the sea obey Him!” (Mark 4:37-41)

Quotations and Comments
“For to us a Son is born, to us a Son is given: and he shall receive the law upon him to keep it; and his name is called from of Old, Wonderful, Counsellor, Eloha, the Mighty, abiding to Eternity, the Messiah, because peace shall be multiplied on us in His days.” (Targum Jonathan, Isaiah 9:6-7)

“What is the name of the King Messiah? R. Abba b. Kahana [Palestinian Amora, late 3rd C] said: His name is “the Lord” [Heb: YHWH, read as Adonai], as it is stated, And this is His name whereby he shall be called, The Lord [Heb: YHWH] is our righteousness’.” (Midrash Rabbah, Lamentations 1:16)

In Hebrew culture a name indicates something, either about the person, or the circumstances, or God. Sometimes it is never intended to be used as a proper name but simply to teach something, as with Solomon, whom the LORD named Jedidiah (beloved of the LORD). This is the only possibility here. The name is obviously not intended as a proper name, but is meant to tell us something about this unique person who will bring about a rule of peace in the whole world. The one who performs such a task will certainly need all the qualities indicated in the name. Astonishingly, one of them is divinity. The disciples of Yeshua were astonished when he demonstrated powers which only the Almighty possesses.
