Prophecies of the Messiah – His Perfection and Innocence

Prophecies of the Messiah – His Perfection and Innocence

The Hebrew Scriptures
My heart is overflowing with a good theme; I recite my composition concerning the King; my tongue is the pen of a ready writer. You are fairer than the sons of men; grace is poured upon your lips; therefore God has blessed you forever. (Psalm 45:1,2)

The LORD God has given Me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him who is weary. He awakens Me morning by morning, He awakens My ear to hear as the learned. The LORD God has opened My ear and I was not rebellious, nor did I turn away. (Isaiah 50:4,5)

He was taken from prison and from judgement, and who will declare his generation? For He was cut off from the land of the living….

And they made His grave with the wicked – but with the rich in his death, because He had done no violence, nor was any deceit in His mouth. (Isaiah 53:8,9)

The New Testament

When all the people were baptised, it came to pass that Jesus also was baptised; and while He prayed, the heaven was opened. And the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove upon Him, and a voice came from heaven which said, “You are my beloved Son; in You I am well pleased.” (Luke 3:21,22)

and we beheld His [Jesus] glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. (John 1:14)

Then they asked Him [Jesus] saying, “Teacher, we know that you say and teach rightly, and You do not show personal favouritism, but teach the way of God in truth…. (Luke 20:21)

Then Pilate, when he had called together the chief priests, the rulers and the people, said to them, “You have brought this man [Jesus] to me, as one who misleads the people. And indeed, having examined him in your presence, I have found no fault in this man concerning those things of which you accuse Him; no, neither did Herod, for I sent you back to him; and indeed nothing deserving of death has been done by Him. (Luke 23:13-15)

And when Jesus had cried out with a loud voice, He said, “Father, ‘into Your hands I commit My spirit.'” Having said this He breathed His last. So when the centurion saw what had happened, he glorified God, saying, “Certainly, this was a righteous man!” (Luke 23:46,47)

Now behold, there was a man named Joseph, a council member, a good and just man. He had not consented to their decision and deed. He was from Arimathea, a city of the Jews, who himself was also waiting for the kingdom of God. This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then he took it down, wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a tomb that was hewn out of the rock, where no one had ever lain before. (Luke 23: 50-53)

Quotations and Comments

“Thy beauty, O King Messiah, is greater than that of the children of men.” (Targum, Psalm 45:2)

“Jonathan ben Uzziel interprets it [Isaiah 53] in the Targum of the future Messiah; and this is also the opinion of our own learned men in the majority of their Midrashim.” (Don Isaac Abravanel [b. 1437], Commentary on Isaiah)

“The addition ‘because he did no violence’ is intended to mark the difference between the Messiah and those wicked Israelites who had perished after perpetrating violence and deceit; he [Isaiah] means to say that though he made his grave with them he had still never participated in their actions.” (Yepheth ben Ali [10th C] Commentary on Isaiah)

Messiah is truly a man, but certainly an extraordinary one. In David’s Psalm he is seen as different to all others, especially in his speech, and Isaiah reveals him, speaking in the first person, as one who submits to all he learns and teaches it perfectly. Isaiah also portrays him as innocent of the crimes for which he was condemned. Yeshua’s life confirms all these things by the testimony of friends, enemies and the authorities.
