Prophecies of the Messiah – His Ascension and Intercession

Prophecies of the Messiah – His Ascension and Intercession

The Hebrew Scriptures
The LORD said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand, till I make Your enemies Your footstool.” (Psalm 110:1)

You have ascended on high, you have led captivity captive; you have received gifts among men, even from the rebellious, that the LORD God might dwell there. (Psalm 68:18)

And the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in His hand. He shall see the labour of His soul, and be satisfied. By His knowledge My righteous Servant shall justify many, for He shall bear their iniquities. Therefore I will divide Him a portion with the great, and He shall divide the spoil with the strong, because He poured out His soul unto death, and He was numbered with the transgressors, and He bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors. (Isaiah 53:11-12)

The New Testament

Now when He (Jesus) had spoken these things, while they watched, He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. And while they looked steadfastly towards heaven as He was went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel, who also said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven.” (Acts 1:9-11)

But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Messiah’s gift. Therefore he says: “When he ascended on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts to men.” (Ephesians 4:7,8)

Who is he who condemns? It is Messiah who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us. (Romans 8:34)

Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.” And they divided His garments and cast lots. (Luke 23:34)

Therefore He [Jesus] is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them. (Hebrews 7:25)

Comments and Quotations

“He (Messiah) shall intercede for many sins, and the rebellious for his sake will be forgiven.” (Targum Jonathan, Isaiah)

“The fact is it refers to King Messiah……..’He was counted with the transgressors’, because they appointed his grave by the side of the wicked. He will intercede for the transgressors, and for those who rise up against Him.” (Herz Homberg, 1749-1841, from the Korem)

David’s reference to his Lord, the Messiah, in Psalm 110, is one that envisages Messiah ruling from heaven. David’s description in Psalm 68 of a person ascending is, in the first place, a reference to Moses going up Mt. Sinai to receive the Law, but because the redemption of Israel from Egypt foreshadows Messiah’s greater redemption, so Messiah ascends, to heaven. Isaiah’s revelation of the Servant Messiah portrays him interceding for sinners after he has suffered for them.

Hence the Scriptures reveal a Messiah who, having finished his earthly ministry, returns to heaven to rule and intercede. There he continues as the Servant of the LORD, working and interceding for the spread of his kingdom, and for God’s mercy on sinners. What Yeshua began to do during his earthly ministry, even interceding for those who crucified him, he now continues to do to this day, from heaven, before he comes again to finalise God’s kingdom (see page 26).
