Prophecies of the Messiah – The Son of David

Prophecies of the Messiah – The Son of David

The Hebrew Scriptures
I have made a covenant with my chosen, I have sworn to my servant David: “your seed I will establish forever, and build up your throne to all generations.” (Psalm 89:3,4)

“Behold, the days are coming,” says the LORD, “That I will raise to David a Branch of righteousness; a King shall reign and prosper, and execute judgement and righteousness in the earth. In His days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell safely; now this is His name by which He will be called: THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.” (Jeremiah 23:5-6)

The New Testament
The book of the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham: (Matthew 1:1)

Then the multitudes who went before (Jesus) and those who followed cried out, saying: “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the LORD! Hosanna in the highest!” (Matthew 21:9)

Then He (Jesus) opened His mouth and taught them saying ….. “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.” (Matthew 5:6)

Quotations and Comments
“Behold the days come, saith the Lord, that I will raise up to David the MESSIAH, who is righteous, and he will reign a King, and shall prosper, and execute the judgement of truth and justice in the earth.” (Targum Jonathan, Jeremiah 23:5-6)

“And they shall worship before the Lord their God, and they shall hearken to MESSIAH, the Son Of David, their King, whom I will raise up unto them.” (Targum Jonathan on Jeremiah 30:9,21)

Finally, God makes plain the family in Judah from which the Messiah-deliverer will come by His promise to David, the son of Jesse. We may wonder at all this precision on God’s part but through it we learn of His control of all events, and His desire that Israel should recognise the true Messiah when he comes, and reject the spurious. Yeshua was a descendant of David.

Jeremiah’s prophecy ensures we don’t lose the plot, failing to see the wood for the trees. Messiah’s deliverance and kingdom is about a return to righteousness. That wasn’t much in evidence in Jeremiah’s day but he prophesies it would be when Messiah comes. This was the focus of Yeshua’s teachings. In particular, Matthew records the words of Yeshua’s sermon on the mount, a peerless exposition of the righteous life, which he urged Israel to pursue. Read Matthew chapters 5 to 7 if you want to know more.
