Prophecies of the Messiah – A Star out of Jacob

Prophecies of the Messiah – A Star out of Jacob

The Hebrew Scriptures
I see Him, but not now; I behold Him, but not near; a Star shall come out of Jacob; a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel, and batter the brow of Moab, and destroy all the sons of tumult. (Numbers 24:17)

The New Testament
I, Jesus, have sent My angel to testify to you these things in the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, the Bright and Morning Star.” (Revelation 22:16)

…..the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers to take Him (Jesus)….. Then the officers came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, “Why have you not brought Him?” The officers answered, “No man spoke like this man!” (John 7:32,45,46)

Quotations and Comments
“A STAR shall proceed out of Jacob, and there shall come a SCEPTRE in Israel. The KING Messiah is here spoken of as a STAR.” (Rabbi Lieva of Prague)

“When a king shall arise out of Jacob and the Messiah be anointed from Israel, He will slay the princes of Moab, and reign over all the children of man.” (Targum Onkelos, Numbers 24:17)

This prophecy reveals Messiah as a ruler who stands out from those around him by brilliance and purity, and one who acts firmly towards those who persistently reject his rule of righteousness. It was uttered by Baalam when he spoke of Israel’s future, predicting a ruler who would deal with their enemies. It is likely that in the first instance the star refers to David, who wrote in Psalm 40:7, “Behold, I come, in the scroll of the book it is written of me. I delight to do your will, O my God.” If we ask what there is in Scripture prior to David, which prophesies David, this is the only possibility. David was a great king, who, like a star, stood out from all around him, strove to rule righteously and who defeated their enemy, Moab. He saw himself as the star and the sceptre of this prophecy. Messiah is David’s greater son, the one who stands out among all kings, who rules righteously and who defeats all God’s enemies. Yeshua stood out in his day by his authority and brilliant teaching. To this day many enemies of God have been subdued by his words, and one day he will return to judge all who have resisted.
