Prophecies of the Messiah – A Prophet like Moses

Prophecies of the Messiah – A Prophet like Moses

The Hebrew Scriptures
The LORD your God will raise up for you a Prophet like me from your midst, from your brethren. Him you shall hear, according to all you desired from the LORD your God in Horeb in the day of assembly saying, “Let me not hear again the voice of the LORD my God, nor let me see this great fire anymore, lest I die.” And the LORD said to me: “What they have spoken is good. I will raise up for them a Prophet like you from among their brethren, and will put my words in His mouth, and He shall speak to them all that I command Him. And it shall be that whoever will not hear my words, which He speaks in My name, I will require it of him.” (Deuteronomy 18:15-19)

The New Testament
Then those men, when they had seen the sign that Jesus did, said, “This is truly the Prophet who is to come into the world.” (John 6:14)

“Everyone who hears these sayings of mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: and the rains descended and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall.” And so it was, when Jesus had ended these sayings, that the people were astonished at His teaching, for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes. (Matthew 7:26-29)

Quotations and Comments
“In fact the Messiah is such a Prophet as is stated in the Midrash on the verse, Behold my servant shall prosper, etc., that he will be ‘greater than Moses,’ which is explained to mean that his miracles will be more wonderful than those of Moses; Moses by the miracles which he wrought, drew but a single nation to the worship of God, but the Messiah will draw all nations to the worship of God.” (Rabbi Levi ben Gershom [14th C], on Deuteronomy 34:10)

The context of Moses’ words is Israel’s desire for God to speak to them on their level, not with a thunderous voice from a mountain. A special prophet is promised by the LORD, who would stand out from Moses and all the prophets by being one who would perfectly speak God’s exact words. He is not one to be trifled with. As one like Moses, he will also mediate a covenant. Yeshua was such a one, and it is by his teachings that the God of Israel is known throughout the world.

.” (Deuteronomy 18:15-19)
