Prophecies of the Messiah – The Messenger of the Covenant

Prophecies of the Messiah – The Messenger of the Covenant

The Hebrew Scriptures
“Behold, I send My messenger, and he will prepare the way before Me. And the Lord, whom you seek, will suddenly come to His temple, even the Messenger of the covenant, in whom you delight. Behold, He is coming,” says the LORD of hosts. (Malachi 3:1)

The New Testament
For this [John the Baptist] is he of whom it is written: “Behold, I send My messenger before Your face, Who will prepare Your way before You.” (Matthew 11:10)

John [the Baptist] answered and said, “A man can receive nothing unless it has been given to him from heaven…. He must increase, but I must decrease. He who comes from above is above all; he who is of the earth is earthy and speaks of the earth. He who comes from heaven is above all.” (John 3:27-31)

Then Jesus went into the temple of God and drove out all those who bought and sold in the temple, and overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who sold doves. And He said to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer,’ but you have made it a ‘den of thieves.'” (Matthew 21:12-13)

Quotations and Comments
“The LORD (? check original, as it is Lord in Mal.) is the King Messiah; He is also the Angel of the Covenant.” (Rabbi David Kimchi [b.1160])

“The LORD (? check original, as it is Lord in Mal.) is both the Divine majesty and the Angel of the Covenant, for the sentence is doubled.” (Rabbi Abraham Ibn Ezra [b 1092 C])

“The LORD (? check original, as it is Lord in Mal.) may be explained of King Messiah.” (Mashimiah Jeshua fol. 76)

“What is to be the manner of Messiah’s coming, and where will be the place of his first appearance? He will make his first appearance in the land of Israel, as it is written, ‘The Lord whom ye seek will come suddenly to His Temple’.” (Rabbi Moses ben Maimon [b.1135])

Malachi was the last of the prophets and he alerts Israel that Messiah is coming and will be announced by a messenger. About 500 years later John, son of Zacharias, began to preach, calling Israel to repentance and pointing to Yeshua as the promised one. Yeshua taught in the Temple on many occasions. Malachi also taught that Messiah and the Messenger (Angel) of the covenant are one and the same person, facing us with the pre-existence of the Messiah. The one who had already spoken many times to Israel would come among them. As stated on page 8, Yeshua spoke of himself in such terms –  “For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.”
